Covid-19: United in Prayers

Rome, March 23, 2020

To: Superiors General/Congregational Leaders

Dear Sisters,

We are very grateful for the many messages, expressing our union of minds and hearts, which were received yesterday on the Day of Solidarity and Prayer, which linked religious congregations of women and men worldwide in this common initiative. We continue to offer our prayers in union with the universal church and so we invite you to call on all your sisters to join Pope Francis on the Feast of the Annunciation, March 25th in praying the Our Father at noon.

Pope Francis has called for all Christians to join together in prayer and to respond to the pandemic with “the universality of prayer, of compassion and tenderness.” He asks us at this time to show our closeness to those who feel most alone, anxious and stressed at this time. He prays that the Lord may listen “to the united prayer of all his disciples who are preparing themselves to celebrate the victory of the Risen Christ.”

The Pope has also invited us to join him through various communication platforms in a special moment of prayer in St. Peter’s Basilica on Friday 27 March at 6 pm (Rome time). This time of prayer will include readings from Scripture, prayers of petition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and will conclude with the Urbi et Orbi blessing.

Here at UISG we are very aware that several congregations in different countries are already deeply affected by the coronavirus. Some have experienced the deaths of members of their communities while others have sisters who have been infected by the virus or residents in institutions run by congregations have been affected. We want to assure each of you that we the members of UISG are close to you and to your sisters at this time. If any individual congregation would like to call on all of us for special prayers for their sisters at this time of crisis, if you contact us, we can share your request with the members of UISG through our various communication platforms. If you have any other need that we may be able to meet, please do not hesitate to contact us.

At this time of great need may the Lord bless us and keep us, may the Lord shed His light upon us and give us His peace.
