“Economy and health: women religious, leaders of a new model” Online meeting promoted by UISG

The second installment of “Sisters Empowering Women” takes place tomorrow, April 27, with a focus on economics and health. Talks by Sr. Alessandra Smerilli, FMA, and Sr. Carol Keehan, DC.

Is a just, sustainable and inclusive economy possible? What contribution can religious women offer in the face of the Coronavirus emergency and in creating an economy that includes and gives dignity to the most marginalized? These questions will be the focus of the second installment of “Sisters Empowering Women”, a series of online meetings organized by the International Union of Superiors General (UISG), scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, April 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. (CET).

“Economy and Health: Women Religious, Leaders of a New Model” is the title of the event that will be live on Zoom (http://bit.ly/3epaQNT) and on UISG’s YouTube channel. After a welcome by Sister Helen Alford, OP, a member of the Pontifical Academy for Social Sciences, the speakers will include Sister Alessandra Smerilli, FMA, Under-Secretary at the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development, and Sister Carol Keehan, DC, Chair of the Task Force for Health of the Vatican Covid-19 Commission. H.E. Sally Jane Axworthy, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to the Holy See will be moderating the event.

The panelists will address the two issues by focusing on the outcome of “The Economy of Francis” summit, the role of the Vatican Covid-19 Commission, the task force established by Pope Francis to address the coronavirus pandemic, and the contribution of religious women for an inclusive and sustainable economy.

This series of meetings highlights various paths of hope initiated by religious congregations worldwide, who aim to live and transmit the values of the encyclical “Fratelli Tutti”, by accompanying and supporting the people who have been most effected and most marginalized by the pandemic. Sisters know that when women are empowered, then families and whole communities are transformed.

The issues will also have great impact on social media thanks to UISG’s Advocacy Project – Sisters, Global Advocacy – which on Wednesday, April 28, is organizing a day of online sharing to celebrate the commitment of women religious around the world. The UISG Voice channels on Twitter and Instagram will collect testimonies and reflections from sisters who are committed to addressing the most complicated challenges of today’s world, from caring for the terminally ill to social integration. To participate, simply share your experience on Twitter and/or Instagram by tagging @uisgvoice and adding the hashtags #SisterhoodWorks and #SistersEmpoweringWomen. Upcoming Sisters Empowering Women event dates are June 3 and 25, July 8 and 15.
